The developers of Minecraft has taken steps to make the Pocket Edition as free-flowing as the original game. Once you've launched the app on your Android phone, you can immediately switch up the settings. It's best to select Creative mode so you can familiarize yourself with the mobile version. This mode allows you to roam the game with reckless abandon because you have all the materials and ingredients in your tool box. No need to scavenge for wood, leaves or meat. They are there for you to familiarize and to try out. If you're looking for challenges and rewards, then switch to Survival mode. As the name implies, you will have to fend for yourself by fighting off mob spawns, monsters and creepers while creating living spaces for your avatar. It can be nerve wracking at first since your inventory is empty, but not impossible. The developers are generous with the tools you can create with just a limited number of resources. They're usually trees - which there are plenty of - sugarcanes, wheat, cows, pigs and sheep. With just these materials, you can harvest food, leather armor, beds, torches, etc. They're also not that hard to gather. It usually takes a few wacks with your fists or with a sword. Just don't forget to pick it up or it doesn't count as a resource. Creating tools is not as hard as gathering since the game generates tools in your inventory. This is a convenient feature to have, but it would have been better if the developers also allow you to create your own weapons instead of a templated tool.
The interface of the game is easy to understand. The health bar on the upper left side is shaped like hearts, while the hunger bar on the upper right hand side is shaped like ham-legs. At the bottom of the screen is your inventory. You may be wondering where the map is. Well, there is no map. You have to source sugarcane to make one. What makes it more irritating is that sugarcanes are hard to come by. Sure, the map will only show empty plots of land. But, it would be better to have a map to see where you're currently located or where you're creating your builds. Without the map, you will end up running around looking for your creations. Another mystery is how difficult it is to make a wooden house. It will take some time to gather all the wood needed to make one. You can however, punch at a side of a hill to make a cave. This will serve as your home, while the wood will be used as a bed and a fire pit.
Minecraft is does not offer a lenient gameplay when you're on Survival mode. Besides the challenges that come with filling up your inventory, you will have to protect yourself from the monsters that come out at night. If they kill you, your inventory will return to zero. Don't worry, you can still get them back. You will just have to return to the area where you died. These set of tasks will be overwhelming for first timers. What you can do is change your difficulty mode to Peaceful. That way, all monsters will ‘erased' from the world until you're confident enough to fight them off.

The appeal of Minecraft is that it you do not have an end goal and you are not part of a storyline. You are in the world that you create. If you are looking for a game that is the perfect balance of the sandbox and adventure genre, then play Terraria. This 2D action-adventure sandbox game is centered around building, crafting, combat and mining. Unlike Minecraft, the game starts with a fully-formed world. Using the tools already available to you - a pickaxe, a sword, and an axe - and other resources, you can craft new items and equipment. By only maintaining the builds, inventory and mob spawns, Minecraft Pocket Edition is a fun and accessible way to play this iconic block game. When Minecraft: Pocket Edition was announced as an exclusive for the Xperia Play, block-builders the world round collectively wept. How long would it be before we could all run from Creepers, beat up sheep for their wool, or build giant structures to worship your favorite Android mascot?
It might have felt like forever, but Minecraft: Pocket Edition is finally available for all Android devices, and it's actually pretty cool (despite how feature-limited it is).
If you've ever played Minecraft on a PC (or even if you haven't), Minecraft: Pocket Edition will look pretty familiar. Everything is nice a blocky and retro-inspired, and it runs quite well. In lieu of actual physical controls, there's an onscreen directional pad with a jump button in the middle of it.
To place blocks, tap somewhere close to you. In the same vein, holding a block close to you will bring up a circle, and when the circle is filled, the block will be destroyed. Currently, there's no tools to destroy things, so everything is destroyed with your bare hands (Chuck Norris-style).
There's also no harvesting of items that you've destroyed. Instead, you have an inifinite amount of supplies, but only the supplies that the game gives you. Tapping the three circles on your item bar brings up the list of blocks (and other assorted goodies), and then you can pick three from there. I'm a bit disappointed TNT isn't included by default, and once crafting is (re)introduced, that'll be the first thing I make.
The controls are fairly tight, although the lack of precision on placing blocks when trying to balance a tablet can become a little frustrating. The camera is no different than the non-pocket edition, and the blocky, first-person interface is still top-notch.
Also missing from this early alpha are day/night cycles, and with that, bad guys. I really wanted to run and blow myself up next to a Creeper (cause hey, that never gets old), but there's none of them to be found. Zombies are suspiciously absent as well, along with all of the farm animals you beat up for their delicious meats, eggs, and wool.
You can still play with friends as long as you're all on the same wireless network, but otherwise, you're flying solo. Minecraft: Pocket Edition also sidesteps the normal Minecraft servers entirely, so you can have any name you want (for now).
Overall, Minecraft: Pocket Edition is a bit underwhelming, especially when there's so much on the desktop version that's missing from the mobile experience. I know it's an early alpha, but for $6.99, I was personally expecting more. That being said, it's still kind of a technical marvel, having such an open sandbox running on mobile devices.

When the game was first released, it lacked the majority of the features from the PC version. There were no monsters, no crafting, no mines, no night and the world was small. However, the developers of the game, Mojang continued to develop the mobile edition till it was unrecognizable from the first edition. What was once called featureless now has loads of underground caves that you can spelunk in, a healthy crafting system, a large number of monsters, starry nights, sunsets, and a world that is infinitely expanding. The initial release of Minecraft: Pocket Edition had none of the things which made its PC counterpart exceptional. On the other hand, the current version is what you would expect from a port of the original Minecraft.

Essentially, Minecraft: Pocket Edition is digital LEGO in an infinite open world with action and gentle RPG elements. There are two modes available in the game, creative and survival.
In the creative mode, you have unlimited access to all the different types of blocks, even ones that cannot be obtained in survival mode. You also have spawn eggs to generate mobs (creatures in the Minecraft world). You have the ability to fly, you are invincible to all sorts of damage, you can mine instantly, your tools don't wear out, you can go through indestructible blocks, and you won't die of starvation.
You have everything you need to start creating the world you want. If you feel like building a small hut or perhaps your local Taco Bell or even an underwater palace, you can do so with the unlimited resources on hand. Basically, you are god and you can shape the world to any way you see fit.
In survival mode, you start empty handed. You have no resources and have to survive using only those that are naturally available. Monsters can deal damage, you have to eat food to survive, farm to meet the requirements of food, and you gain experience for any activity you perform. When you start off in survival mode, you need to gather as many resources as possible during the day and hide during night time to avoid getting killed by monsters or mobs.
There is even a multiplayer mode where you can play Minecraft with your friends and other users from around the world. You can create worlds together or go on campaigns to defeat the toughest monsters out there.
Verdict
Minecraft: Pocket Edition has grown a lot since its first release. For $6.99, the game is an absolute steal. You can play the game for countless hours and still find new things to do. The developers are active and continue to add more features to the game. Whether you are a fan of the series or a newbie looking for an adventure, Minecraft: Pocket Edition will blow your mind.
